10 Ways to Burglar-Proof Your Home This Thanksgiving

10 Ways to Burglar-Proof Your Home This Thanksgiving

The holiday season brings with it a feeling of warm and joyous positivity, but there is also a downside: increased risk for burglary. According to a recent study by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, an average of 400,000 home invasions occur during the months of November and December, and many of those break-ins happen in homes where the owners have gone away for the holidays. If your plan is to travel this Thanksgiving, how can you protect your home while you’re gone? We’ve got ten Thanksgiving home safety tips to help you keep your home safe and secure while away.
Tip #1 – Invest in a Security System
While this might seem like an obvious suggestion, it’s also one of the most effective. Rutgers School of Criminal Justice found that homeowner’s who purchase a security system that includes an alarm, motion sensor lights, and surveillance cameras can decrease the likely-hood of a break-in by 20 percent.
Tip #2 – Don’t Advertise your Plans
As tempting as it is to share your holiday happiness, avoid talking about your plans on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. While there are security measures you can take to keep your posts somewhat private, it’s still possible for people you don’t know to see what you’ve shared, making you potentially vulnerable to burglars.
Tip #3 – Secure the Entry Points
Check all doors and windows to ensure that your home’s locks are functional. Replace any that aren’t, and consider purchasing deadbolts for all exterior entry doors.
Tip #4 – Stop the Mail
Piles of mail accumulating in your mailbox are a dead giveaway of your absence. If you plan on being away for an extended period of time, arrange to either have your mail held by the post office or picked up by a trusted friend or family member.
Tip #5 – Tell your Neighbors
Inform neighbors you know and trust of your plans and ask that they keep an eye out on your house while you’re gone. You can also leave them a spare a key and a list of emergency contacts they can call if they spot any issues with your property.
Tip #6 – Leave it Looking “Lived-In”
While you don’t want to leave messes lying around when you leave, it’s a good idea to take steps to make it appear as though someone is home. Leave your curtains parted slightly, consider parking a car in the driveway, mow your lawn/rake your leaves, or ask a friend or neighbor to make sure that your pathways are clear of snow if the cold weather has already hit your area before you leave.
Tip #7 – Mind your Sliding Doors
Sliding doors are one of the prime entry points for criminals. Secure all sliding doors in your home with a metal bar in the runner or special lock made specifically for that purpose.
Tip #8 – Check your Landscaping
Overgrown bushes and shrubs, especially around windows, are a convenient place for burglars to hide and make their way into your home. Consider removing any that are too close to the windows or at least ensure that they are kept trimmed at all times.
Tip #9 – Put your Lights on a Timer
Timers that switch your lights on and off and pre-programmed times are a relatively easy and inexpensive way to add extra security while you’re away. Thieves tend to stake out houses before they break-in, and odds are much less likely that a potential burglar will touch a well-lit home that appears to have someone inside.
Tip #10 – Don’t Forget the Garage
Often we focus so much on securing our homes that we forget about our garages. Not only can they be an easy entryway into the main house if they’re attached, but they also contain valuable tools, many of which can actually be used to break into the house. Make sure all garage entry points are properly locked and consider installing motion lighting.
While there are of course no guarantees that taking these steps will prevent your house from being burglarized, they will drastically reduce the chances of that happening. By following our tips, you can enjoy your Thanksgiving getaway knowing your home is well protected.
