How to Secure Your Home While Away on Vacation This Summer
Summer is the perfect time for a family vacation. The kids are out of school, the sun is shining, and you’re itching for a break from work. But, before you hit the road, make sure you take a few precautions to keep your home and valuables safe and secure while you’re away.
Even if you have a cutting-edge Allstar Alarm home security system, these tips and tricks will show you how to secure your home so you don’t have to spend your vacation worrying about burglars or other problems.
Hire a House Sitter
The best way to make your house appear occupied while you’re gone is to, well, keep it occupied! Ask a friend or hire someone you trust to stay at your house while you’re on vacation. This person will keep up the day-to-day operations of your home – he or she will care for your pet, water the plants, collect the mail, close the curtains at night, and do other duties that your trusted alarm system cannot.
Let the Neighbors Know
If you plan to be gone for a week or more, it might be a good idea to give your trusted neighbors a heads up. That way, they can keep an eye on your home and notify you and the police right away if they suspect any funny business. In some communities, it may also be appropriate to let the local police know you will be gone – they may go out of their way to drive by your house and be on the look-out for burglars in the area.
Keep up Appearances
If you’re unable to hire a house sitter, you still want to make your home appear occupied while you’re on vacation. Contact the post office and your newspaper service to put a hold on deliveries. When criminals see a pile of mail, it’s a good indicator that your home is empty and a prime target. Additionally, you might consider hiring someone to mow your lawn over the course of the week, as an unkempt lawn is also a sign of an unoccupied house.
Before you leave, you may have the urge to close the curtains to prevent passers-by from looking in your windows. However, this isn’t recommended because closed curtains during the day are a change from the norm. If you leave your home appearing any different from usual, it could be a red flag for criminals. Additionally, if you keep a spare house key on your property, make sure to take the key inside or give it to a neighbor while you’re gone.
Keep Quiet on the Web
Vacations are exciting and it can be terribly tempting to announce your vacation plans on social media. However, for safety reasons, this is highly discouraged. When you share your plans online, you let the world know that you will be away and your home will be unoccupied. Instead, wait until you return from your trip to share your exciting pictures and memories with your friends, family, (and strangers) online.
